Did you know that Malaysia takes in more high-tech foreign students of over 100,000 from more than 150 countries? No wonder, then, that Indian students are settling increasingly in this multicultural learning environment.
But before you start packing your bag, one key step between you and your Malaysian classroom—the student visa. The good news? Not quite as complicated as it appears to be. In fact, with the right advice, the entire process turns out to be surprisingly simple.
We walk you through every step of the way—at BCES Admissions Abroad, from choosing your courses to visa approval. To get you going, here is the easy process of how the student visa in Malaysia works.
Step-by-Step Procedure of Malaysia Student Visa
Step 1: Choose the Suitable Course and Institute
The first step is choosing a course according to your future goals. You must apply for admission to a Malaysian university or college that is approved by the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) and registered with Education Malaysia Global Services (EMGS). Always make sure that the college or university is recognized to accept international students.
Step 2: Submit Your Application to the Institution
After finalizing your selection, submit your academic transcripts, copy of your passport, English language test scores (if required), and other supporting documents. Your profile will be checked by the institution and, if shortlisted, the institution will initiate the application process for a visa through EMGS.
Step 3: Get the Visa Approval Letter (VAL)
Upon receiving the admission offer and the payment of the applicable fees, your institution will make a request for your Visa Approval Letter (VAL). This is a letter issued by the Malaysian Immigration Department. The VAL can take approximately 4 to 6 weeks to be approved.
Step 4: Apply for a Single-Entry Visa (SEV)
Once you have received the VAL, your subsequent action will be applying for a Single-Entry Visa (SEV) from the nearest Malaysian Consulate or Embassy in India. You can use the visa to enter Malaysia. You will need the VAL, passport, admission letter, finance documents, and other supporting documents for this purpose.
Step 5: Enter Malaysia
After your SEV has been approved, you can now travel. You will be given a 30-day social visit pass by immigration officers in Malaysia when you arrive. Your college or university will further help you with the rest of your visa process during this time.
Step 6: Proceed with Medical Screening After Arrival
During the first 7 days of your stay in Malaysia, you will need to have a medical check-up at one of the EMGS-approved clinics. You will need to be in good health in order for your student pass to be processed.
Step 7: Obtain Your Student Pass
Once your medical reports are cleared and your documents verified, your student pass will be issued by the Immigration Department. This is an entry-entry visa, which is normally for one year and renewable according to the duration of your course.
