Studying in Germany is less expensive than in most other European countries because many courses at public universities are tuition-free. Scholarships in Germany for International students
The German Academic Exchange Service, or DAAD, is an organisation that helps undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctorate students study in Germany. International students can apply for a variety of scholarships. If you are an international student, you have a good chance of acquiring a visa if you:
- Have exceptional academic performance and high school grades.
- Participate in civic activities.
- To qualify for a scholarship, you must meet certain criteria, such as socioeconomic or family-based criteria.
- Apply to a lesser-known foundation rather than a well-known scholarship.


Student visa to study in Germany
To study in Germany, you will need a student visa, which you must apply for well in advance. You can apply for a visa at your home country’s German diplomatic mission. You can apply for two types of visas as an international student.
- Prospective student visa: As the name implies, the prospective student visa is provided to students who have not received notification of admission from their selected school. It is valid for three months and can be extended for another six months. When you receive your admission news, you can apply for a student resident permit.
- Student visa: Once you have been admitted to the university of your choosing, you can apply for a student visa. It would be valid for three months after it was issued.
The visa application fee is between €60 and €75 and varies by country due to fluctuating exchange rates.
Student insurances to study in Germany
An insurance policy would cost between €110 and €190 per month, depending on your age, pre-existing ailments, and stage of study. At the time of enrollment, proof of insurance must be submitted. You can choose between public and private insurance, as follows:
- In Germany, public insurance costs roughly €105-€110 (one-time premium) for students. These are the typical fees for both domestic and international students. Most of these providers have agreements with prominent insurance companies and offer superior coverage. - While public insurance is available to students studying in Germany, certain international students who register for language and preparatory courses are not qualified for it. Private insurance is required in such cases, and it costs roughly €30-€35 per month (up to €50).
