Understanding the Rules for Freelancing in Singapore as an International Students

11 July 2025

Studying in Singapore is not only a matter of gaining academic knowledge but it also results in exposure to actual life situations that provide students with experience and help them earn their living. For the majority of Indian students, freelancing is the most attractive option to gain flexible income during study seasons. However, it is crucial to understand the legal scenario and follow the rules very strictly to avoid any violation of visas.

Singapore also has policies that are student-centered, but no less strict in applying immigration regulations among foreign students. Foreign students are offered part-time work, but freelancing as an alternative non-conventional part-time work must be carried out with utmost caution and a very clear understanding of what is allowed. Freelancing without the proper authorization may risk your visa status. So, before you step into platforms like Fiverr or Upwork, you should be aware of what is allowed and the way to do it the right way.

At BCES Admissions Abroad, not only do we guide Indian students through the admission process, but we also assist them in getting accustomed to life once they arrive in Singapore. Following is a brief and updated explanation of how you can go into freelancing legally while studying in Singapore.

  1. The Work Limitations of Student Pass

If you are a full-time student at an approved Singapore institution (such as NUS, NTU, SMU, or PSB Academy), you possess a Student Pass under the care of the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA). You are allowed to work up to 16 hours a week while in term-time and full-time during holidays—but with the permission of your institution and only in approved employment.

  1. Is Freelancing Legal Work?

Here comes the catch. Singapore’s Ministry of Manpower does not view freelancing as a part-time student employment unless you are legally registered as an independent worker with the Accounting and Corporate Regulatory Authority (ACRA). This is the legally required process if you are doing it on your own and getting paid for it.

  1. Can Indian Students Register as Freelancers in Singapore?

To be registered as a freelancer or self-employed person, one would normally be required to be a Permanent Resident, Citizen, or legal holder of a work pass not allowing such activity. Sadly, being a holder of a Student Pass does not qualify one as a registered self-employed person. This implies that the conventional method of proofreading, i.e., providing design services, coding, or marketing on freelance websites, is not legally allowed for under a student visa.

What Indian Students Can Do Rather Than the Illegal Route

  1. Part-Time Jobs through University Approval

Lead the legal path: apply for part-time jobs through your university career office or through organizations that are ICA and MOM-approved. Tutoring, cafe work, or assisting with university events are regular and legal choices.

  1. Internship Opportunities

Look for internships that are approved by your college or as part of your study curriculum. These jobs mostly pay stipends and are also considered work experience without any breach of visa standards.

  1. Volunteering with Stipends or Training Allowance

There are certain volunteering experiences that come with training allowances. Although they cannot match the salary or freelance income, they do support basic expenses.

  1. Build Your Portfolio for the Future

Freelancing outright is not permitted while you are in studies but there is one method that you can utilize your time in Singapore to create a professional portfolio. Freelance on independent projects, work together with other students, and sharpen your skills. After graduation and submitting an application for an official work visa (for example, an S Pass or Employment Pass), you are then legally permitted to freelance or even start your own business.

At BCES Admissions Abroad, we believe money is a concern studying abroad. But being legal is always a greater concern. Rather than risking your Student Pass status by taking up illegal freelance work, we invite Indian students to obtain a legal part-time job and internship, which not only earns you money but enhances your experience.
