How to Switch from Tier 4 Visa to Graduate Route in the UK: A Complete Guide for International Students

08 August 2025

For the majority of global students, studying in the UK is only the beginning of an even greater adventure. Following months of dedication, hard work, and adjustment to a new country, the next rational step entails gaining valuable professional experience. This is where the Graduate Route, or the UK post-study work visa, comes into the picture. If you are currently in the UK on a Tier 4 (Student) visa, this article hopes to guide you through your process of transitioning to the Graduate Route.

At BCES Admissions Abroad, we know how important it is to carefully plan your next step, particularly with regards to immigration and future career prospects. This article has been prepared to make things simpler and easier for you and your fellow students seeking current advice.

What is the Graduate Route (Post-Study Work Visa)?

Graduate Route is a route through which international students can remain and work (or seek work) in the UK for two years after the successful completion of a UK degree. For PhD graduates, it is three years.

This unsponsored visa is not requiring you to have an offer of employment to apply. It provides you with the chance to experiment with different career paths, gain practical experience, and prepare for future goals, either in the UK or in your own home.

Who is Eligible for the Graduate Route?

To be eligible, you should:

  • Be present in the UK when applying
  • Hold a current Tier 4 or Student visa at the time of making the application.
  • Have obtained a degree (bachelor’s, master’s, or PhD) from a Home Office-licensed student sponsor
  • Make your university inform UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) of your study completion

Critical Update:

Until the current year, the two-year postgraduate validity period for postgraduate students under the Graduate Route has not been altered. However, the United Kingdom government has expressed plans to undertake further reviews of post-study work rules, therefore, the need to stay up-to-date.

When Should You Apply?

You are free to apply as soon as your university confirms your course completion to UKVI. You need to apply before your Tier 4 visa expires. You don’t have to wait for the graduation ceremony, but you need to have official confirmation from your institution.
