UK Imposes New English-Language Rules for International Students – Here's What You Should Know

1. Compulsory Secure English Language Test (SELT)

From the year 2026 onwards, the students will need to take an accepted Secure English Language Test (SELT) by the UK Home Office. This will test proficiency on the four key areas of reading, writing, speaking and listening.

2. Higher Proficiency Level – B2 Standard

The minimum English competency requirement has been set higher from B1 (Intermediate) to B2 (Upper-Intermediate) and is equivalent to the English proficiency usually held by students passing UK A-Level or Class 12. Accordingly, universities and immigration officials will be looking for more mature English language proficiency applicable to purposes related to academic research, communications, and daily interactions.

3. Improved Verification Process

Results of English language tests will now be verified further. Only test scores released by accredited test providers will be accepted, and all the results will be checked and confirmed during the process of visa to ascertain authenticity.

4. Shortened Graduate Route Period

The Graduate Route visa, by which international graduates can stay within the UK after graduation, will also be impacted. From 1 January 2027, the majority of the students will be allowed to stay within the UK for 18 months and not the current 24 months. Doctoral graduates will remain eligible for the long stay.

5. Updated Financial Requirements

Other than the language requirement variations, the government has also increased the maintenance finances needed to acquire the UK student visa. Applicants are now required to demonstrate increased financial strength to support the justification to sustain them through the period of study.
